Castleknock

Swords Manor  0   Castleknock Celtic  2  (a.e.t.)

NDSL U-13, Joe Kirby Cup

17th Oct. 2009

Castleknock, after a tense, exciting, closely fought game, came away from Swords with their passage to the next round of the Joe Kirby secure.  This contest went right to the wire, and it took 20 minutes of extra time to separate the teams.

Castleknock had the better of the first half chances, but after the break it was a different story.  Swords applied serious pressure, but the Castleknock defence stood firm with a series of brave tackles and great goalkeeping, that saw the game remain scoreless.  With 12 minutes remaining, Castleknock with a swift counter attack won a penalty, when a Manor defender handled  just inside the area.   The penalty kick was saved, and neither team created any real chances in the remaining minutes.  Full time 0-0

Extra time saw a much improved Castleknock take the game to Swords.  Midway through the first period of extra time, some wing wizardry from Paul Donoghue saw him set up Kacper Kuzma for the breakthrough goal.  More wing magic from Lee Penrose during the second period of extra time, saw him set up Paul Donoghue for the second and clinching goal.

The defensive unit must get special mention, as must David Kelly and Kacper Kuzma, who played despite illness and injury.  2-0
