"Celtic bow out in style from the Leinster Junior Cup"
Leinster Junior Cup
15 Feb 2009

Celtic were drawn against Killester Utd in a 6th
round home fixture in the Leinster Junior Cup, but
it was a step too far. They soon fell behind to
the visitors and there was a fear that the gap in league
divisions would be reflected in the scoreline. But
Celtic had not read the script. They bounced back with
an equaliser from Kevin Keane. They fell behind
again however from a free kick following a free kick on
the edge of the box. It was hit well into the far
corner that gave Garga t'Uway, the Celtic keeper, little
chance as he could only get a hand on it. Half
time 1-2
There was little to choose between the teams for long
spells. But Celtic were competing well right
through the squad. They got their reward halfway
into the second half. Steve O'Callaghan got possession
on the left hand side and hit a cross that we wondered
what it was. We soon found out. It sailed into the
far corner of the net that left the game finely
balanced. 2-2.
We entered the final quarter and the balance moved in
favour of the visitors. They enjoyed the lion's
share of the possession, and they got their reward.
A lapse at the back left the big United striker free 25
yards out. He moved purposefully forward, and let
fly with a laser precision shot like a cruise missile
into the far corner of the net. It was the final
blow, though Celtic did not believe it. They
fought on, and they almost grabbed the equaliser with
the final kick of the game, when after Larry Jacob
raced into the box, battled his way to the end line, set
up Colm Brady, who agonisingly put his shot wide, as the
onlooking spectators held their breath. The final
whistle blew to the welcome cheers of the visitors and
bitter disappointment of the gallant losers, who felt
they had deserved a better outcome. They can now
return to the business of their title challenge.
