Castleknock Celtic 2 Freebooters 1
"Celtic advance into 4th round of Leinster Junior Cup"
Leinster Junior Cup
30 Nov. 08
Celtic's AUL Senior Sunday side
put in a tremendous performance to take the scalp of the
LJCup holders, Freebooters, in this 3rd round contest in
Porterstown. After all the gloom of the previous
day's fog and frost, it was brilliant sunshine
throughout.
Freebooters looked the part
early on, and took the lead after 20 mins with a defence
splitting pass to spring the offside trap, which was
deftly chipped over Garga t'Uway in the Celtic goal.
0-1
The lead only lasted some 15
mins, when after sustained pressure, Celtic's midfield
weaved their way into the 'booters box with a succession
of excellent passing. Adam O'Callaghan squared the
ball for Shane Murphy who dummied the keeper and slotted
home. 1-1
Freebooters started the second
half and were on top for the third quarter of the game.
Celtic fought their way back into contention, through
sheer grit and determination and not a little skill.
Then 15 mins from time, the home supporters were treated
to the winning goal that brought them all back 14 years
to New York and Ray Houghton's goal v Italy in the World
Cup. Andy Weldon sent his free kick into the 'booters
box, there was a scramble, and Steve O'Callaghan looped
his shot over the keeper, who just failed to keep it
out.
For the final 15 mins, it was
all hands to the pump as the Kilkenny visitors showed
why they have won this trophy 3 times, and are the
current holders. They hit Celtic with everything that
they could muster, but it w as
Celtic's defence that prevailed, with Garga t'Uway in
magnificent unbeatable form. Also inspiring his
team was Graham Fennell who drove his team mates
on with his inimitable driving encouragement. In an
extremely committed contest, there were surprisingly few
bookings, with Celtic's Derek Fagan and Colm Brady going
into the book. Full marks however to the Celtic
team who put their indifferent league form behind them
to raise their game for this prestigious cup game.
They are looking forward to a good run again this
season. 2-1
