"Celtic bow out of FAI Junior Cup at 3rd Round stage"

FAI Junior Cup

22 Nov. 08

Celtic's Div2A AUL side exited the FAI Junior Cup with their heads held high.  They were well in this game right up to the final minutes.  The sides were all square at half time 0-0 despite having chances to score in the first period.  0-0 Half time.

Bluebell were on top early in the second half which saw them take a lead from a scrappy goal when Celtic failed to clear their lines.  But within minutes at the midway point of the second half, Celtic struck back when Alan Darcy was taken down in the box and the ref did not hesitate to point to the spot to the loud protests of the visiting Bluebell players.  Up stepped Odie Fanning who despatched the ball to the corner of the Bluebell keeper's net.  1-1.

It was nip and tuck with chances at either end, especially with John Moriarty coming very close late on following a free into the box.  With 3 mins remaining, Celtic conceded a free kick on the edge of the box.  The Bluebell free taker found the perfect shot to the bottom right hand corner, giving Muller no chance in the Celtic goal.  Heartache for a team that had battled from start to finish.  John Moriarty put in a man of the match performance and he deserved the award.

Celtic can be proud of their progress, especially when you realise that they were playing schoolboy football 2 years ago.
