"Campaign off to a Winning Start in Drogheda"

NDSL 14Premier

14 Sept 08

Celtic took to a very poor pitch in Drogheda.  The visitors had more than the pitch to contend with however, as some of the official's decisions left something to be desired.

Celtic's passing game was a dream to watch with Mo Mahdy, Luke Gealon, Sean Hanny, Dermot Murray and Arthur Stark, all excelling from the start.

Murray as usual was electric on the left, opening up the Drogheda defence at will.  But often the Celtic attacks were frustrated by the over-zealous use of the whistle for offsides.

Eventually Slevin broke through, rounded the keeper, and shot to see the ball cleared off the line and out for a corner. Gealon floated it into the box and the ball was met by a thunderous Stark volley into the roof of the net. 1-0 to Celtic.

Celtic pressed on to increase their advantage, continuing to pass their opponents off the pitch.  In the middle of the defence, Cian Conway was outstanding, winning every tackle, as was Hanny in the centre.

Celtic went close with great shots from Slevin, Gealon, and Mahady, but were denied by stunning saves from the Drogheda keeper. Then Slevin broke the line, rounded the keeper, and it was 2-0 at the break.

The second half was a mirror of the first.  Celtic were resolute and manly, and the game ended as a contest when Stark blasted a thunderous shot from 15 yards.  3-0 Celtic and a job well done.
