Malahide Utd 1 Castleknock Celtic 1
"Celtic desperately unlucky as they exit in the
final minute"
Under-14s
Thunderr Cup
1st March
2009
Castleknock Celtic can count themselves very unfortunate
to be out of the DDSL Under 14 Thunder Cup after losing
to the ddsl premier team with the last kick of the
match.
Castleknock started very well and took the lead when
Stephen Treadwell ran onto a through ball from Adam
Noonan to fire in a brilliant left foot shot. The
Castleknock midfield of Darragh McCarthy, Adam Noonan
and Mark Conroy continued to drive forward and had the
Malahide team in all sorts of trouble. But it was the
brilliance of Adam Weafer in the Celtic goal that kept
them ahead when he made a stunning save to push a shot
destined for the top corner around the post.
The turning point of the game came after 30 minutes.
Kevin Flanagan sent Treadwell through again, he pushed
the ball round the goalkeeper to leave a simple tap in,
but in a move that would do Brian O'Driscoll proud, the
goalkeeper took Stephen right out of it. The Referee
gave a free for what he said was outside the box and
then to the total dismay of the travelling supporters,
he only booked the goalkeeper. Had Celtic gone two up,
it is certain they would have gone on to win. The
resultant free kick from Sean Hoare was an excellent one
but their goalkeeper made a superb save. Two minutes
later their centre forward het a superb chip over Adam
Weafer to bring his side level.
The second half was a tight affair. Shane Dunne and
Eoghan Bradshaw shone in defence for Castleknock. Celtic
did have some chances through Sean Conroy and Stephen
Treadwell. While Paul Daly and Stephen Kenna also
impressed. With the game looking like extra time a break
from Malahide resulted in their midfielder latching on
to a breaking ball in the box and firing home low and
hard.
It was a cruel blow to a very brave Castleknock team.
But this Castleknock have lots of courage and will now
turn their minds to the matter of improving their league
position, which does not do them any justice.
