After their superb win
last Sunday against their main challengers, Clontarf, Celtic travelled to
Baldoyle for this midweek encounter. But alas, they went down to an
injury time stunner from old foes Baldoyle, but it should and could have all
been so different.
Celtic started very well
with both Brian Slevin and Conor Byrne going close. Conor Byrne then
got the ball, pushed it past the centre-half into the box only to be
cynically scythed down by the centre-half but to the amazement of all, the
ref played on. Conor Byrne then had to be carried off the pitch and played
no further part.
Celtic poured forward with
Dylan Gourlay flashing past the post from the corner!
The ref was giving Celtic
nothing as Baldoyle roughed up the league leaders, and appeared to be blind
to the rough stuff of the baldoyle lads. 0-0 at half time.
Celtic continued to
dominate but failed to put the opposition away, and when Dermot Murray
flashed a header just wide when a goal looked certain, concern was
etched on the faces of the Celtic management team.
The game was
meandering to a 0-0 draw despite Celtic pressure, when Baldoyle broke in
the last minute to see the left winger score an absolute belter in the
top corner! A sucker punch indeed, which Celtic did not deserve.
But when you fail to take your chances, that’s what happens in football.
They must dust themselves down now, and get geared up for their showdown
with Ashbourne Utd on Sunday morning in Porterstown at 10am in the Kevin
Moran Cup.
