Cloughertown 2
Castleknock Celtic 2
NDSL 11A League
29 Oct 06
From the off, Cloughertown were closing down every
Castleknock move and hung close to every Celtic player.
However, it was Castleknock who opened their account
first. Eve Farrelly cleared her lines to Keith Farrell
who passed an incisive ball out to the right wing to
Gareth Ruane. He tore past the defender and hit a high
ball to the far side of the box. It was met on the
volley by James Carolan who smacked it into the top left
corner of the net………a sweeter goal you will never see.
1-0.
As
the first half progressed, the home side piled on the
pressure down the right wing. They were unlucky not to
have scored twice, when they hit the side netting and
smashed one against the post. They were rewarded just
before half time with a fine shot that gave Kevin
McGovern no chance. 1-1.
The
referee was certainly alert but fair today and blew up
for any misdemeanour, from both sides, on the park.
After the break, Nicky Kelly hit a ball from defence to
Eoin Newman in midfield. A defence splitting pass saw
Carolan burst through from the half way line. He
outpaced the defenders and cool as a cucumber lobbed the
oncoming goalkeeper. 2-1
Cloughertown responded with vigour, and piled on the
pressure. McGovern saved bravely at the feet of an
oncoming attacker who left the boot in when he should
really have held back. Jose would have been apoplectic
at the challenge. He was hurt but got on with the game
as usual. It was all hands to the pump, as the home
side launched in the ball after ball into the
Castleknock goal. And finally, the home side were
rewarded with a fine shot that gave McGovern no chance.
Final score 2-2.
It
was a beautiful morning in North County Dublin but
difficult for both teams with the long wet grass making
the ball very greasy. This was the first point that
Cloughertown dropped. Not many teams come out here and
leave with a point. But Celtic themselves were on a
high after dumping Swords from the Premier Division out
of the Cup the previous week.
