Sporting their new kit, sponsored by Ammeon and Manhattan, they spent the first quarter trying to come to grips with the ferocious Dublin Airport wind. They were also having to compete with a determined Tolka Rovers who were anxious to show that they were not going to lie down against the League Champions. Rovers went close on a couple of occasions, but it was the formidable figure of Nomah Erediauwa who once again made the breakthrough with as cool a finish from close range as you are likely to see. The game flowed from end to end and Tolka were making this final a very competitive contest with their No.7 in particular showing his skill and determination. Jonathon O’Reilly was showing his own skills raiding from the midfield, but it was Celtic’s captain, Vilius Labutis, who was to add to his goal tally when he hit a glorious left footed curler into the top corner out of the reach of the excellent Rovers’ keeper. 2-0 H/T.

Celtic’s deadly finishing was decisive in the first half, but you have to acknowledge the flowing football that they produced despite the woeful wind that destroyed many a game this weekend. It was this style of play that was a joy to watch and gave them the dominance in the game. Although there were scares at the back from time to time as Tolka tried to claw their way back, they were finding it very difficult to hold off the flowing movement from defence from any of the Celtic rearguard, whether it was Eugie Rowland, Charlie Mutawe or Alan Elliott, all of whom demonstrated huge amounts of skill. They had of course Andrew Cunningham behind them and he took off a brave diving save at a crucial stage in the second half to maintain Celtic’s advantage. Brian Dalton gave his usual excellent performance showing amazing touches and was very unlucky not to be on the scoresheet. Conor Kitching hit a stunning shot half way through the second half that hit the back of the net like a rocket that put Celtic out of sight. Adam Kelly and Lorcan Melia proved a handful for Tolka with their attacking play. While Celtic possess bags of talent, they are essentially a group of players who play a very attractive brand of football as a team, for which they are to be congratulated. This is what has delivered a most successful season for them. They can now look forward to taking on new challenges in the campaigns ahead. A final word goes to manager Robbie Ryan and his assistant, coach  Tony Mantero, who is obviously relishing his coaching role on his return to Celtic. Robbie and Tony were quick to point out that the team has got its due reward for all the hard work that they have put in throughout the season. Amen to that.

Joseph Offome got the much deserved Mochtas goal late on.

Celtic started off well and looked the more likely in the opening quarter. They duly took the lead on 17 minutes through a fine piece of opportunism by the prolific Ruari Paton who seized onto an incisive ball from the midfield. He had earlier been denied what looked a beautiful finish which was rightly ruled out for offside. St Mochtas were threatening especially from their flying winger Joseph Offeme and they had chances to square the game but they trailed 1-0 at half time.

It was a game when players were anxious to avoid making mistakes, so flowing moves were rare. Celtic did get their second from a good move which ended with Ruari getting a fine second which seemed to put them out of sight. But St Mochtas fought back and could easily have leveled things if they had converted a soft penalty awarded for what looked a decent tackle in the Celtic box. They did manage a goal 5 mins from time when their influential winger Joseph Offeme scored from close range. Naoisha McAloon was awarded the player of the match for her crucial saves, including the penalty. Gabby Aghinita was tremendous in the middle of the park and played a captain’s part. Evin Lawlor was tireless on the right wing and put in many killer balls that on another day would have delivered goals. Celtic however held on and duly lifted the Cup. Congratulations to Tony Molloy and his assistant Colin Lawlor for leading their team to success, Cup winners and League runners-up. Celtic have 3 more finalists on Sunday, so fingers crossed and best wishes to them.

2-1 match action 

Meantime, Eamonn Atkinson’s U-13s who had done great to get to the final of a tough competition, were outgunned by a much stronger side from Sandhill Celtic who completed the double. In fairness, Sandyhill were wrongly placed in this Cup and league and should appropriately have been in a much higher league. As ever, Andy O’Neill was in fine form on the Castleknock right wing and was unlucky not to be on the score sheet. Jack Rowsome put in an enormous shift and must have been a strong candidate for man of the match. Great credit to manager Eamonn Atkinson and his assistant Fintan Rowsome who have been tireless in their dedication throughout the season. match action

Taaffe Cup: Celtic 2  St Kevin’s Boys 2.  2-4 to St Kevin’s a.e.t.

Celtic came back from the dead in this Cup Final. Down 0-2 with minutes remaining, Kyle Turner launched a menacing free kick into the box, which Patrick Mikolajczak seized on to reduce the deficit.  Then in injury time, a speculative long ball into the box was again chased down by Patrick and he made no mistake to take the game to extra time.  Celtic had their tails up and certainly looked the more likely to get the winner, but it eluded them and the dreaded penalties arrived.  Fair play to St Kevin’s, they held their nerve and won the Cup 4-2 on penalties. Celtic can be proud of a lot of progress this season and they now look forward to stepping up to the top level next season.  match action

Lee Kavanagh Cup: Celtic 1  Greystones Utd 2

Celtic gave it their all against a very skilful side from Co Wicklow. It was nip and tuck throughout with little to separate the sides. Ahmed gave Celtic the lead in the first half when he finished with aplomb. Greystones deservedly drew level, and the game flowed from end to end. In the dying minutes, a superb strike from 15 yards shot into the roof of the net giving the Celtic keeper no chance.  It was indeed a brave effort by Celtic in their away strip of yellow, but full marks to Greystones who take the  Cup south. The Celtic boys can feel very proud having won the Cup last season and runners-up this season – many a team would be very pleased with such success, and of course they will strike back next season. A special thank you to manager Peter Killian who had the boys very well prepared for their campaign.  match action
