NDSL U-10Premier: Celtic too strong for Clonee Utd: 3-1

“Turner Hat Trick seals comfortable win for Celts”

Castleknock Celtic U-10’s continued their recent good form with a comfortable win in the Cup at Porterstown against a hard working Clonee Utd .

Castleknock started where they left off the previous week against Dunboyne at a whirlwind pace and were ahead within 2 minutes. A good ball was played through towards Lloyd Turner and Matthew Russell but their combined effort was blocked. From the re-bound Lloyd Turner hit a thunderous right foot shot past the helpless Clonee goalkeeper into the left hand corner of the net.  The Clonee players were clearly shell shocked as Castleknock continued to attack down both flanks. On the right Leigh Reilly was finding loads of space and looking to release Turner, who was alive to everything, with some fine defence splitting passes, while on the left young Dylan Mc Donagh and Matthew Russell were combining well. It wasn’t long before the Celts scored a second. Mc Donagh, following good work with Russell, struck a left foot shot from 20 yards out that was parried well by the goalkeeper but into the path of the ever alert Turner who finished in style. Castleknock were clearly dominant and all Clonee could do was to defend deeply where their goalkeeper denied further efforts from Turner, Russell and Mc Donagh  following excellent build up play

Whenever Clonee did get the chance to break they were met by the immovable force that is Keith O’ Donoghue who won every ball that came his way and ensured that goalie, Mark Hughes, was having a quiet day. As half time neared Castleknock nearly scored a third as Sean Mc Clean released Mikey Rogers who made a great run beating 3 players before forcing the Clonee goalkeeper to save well. Half time 2-0.

Changes were made at half time with Reilly and Mc Donagh coming back on and Matthew Russell, who had worked so hard in the first half, going in goal. However it was Clonee who brought themselves back into the game with a well worked goal from a corner kick when Castleknock failed to close down the Clonee midfielder at the edge of the box who finished in some style. Castleknock were rocked and credit to Clonee who applied immediate pressure with 4 corners in a row that were dealt with by Mark Hughes on the near post.

As the half progressed, Castleknock regained the initiative. John Kane was getting forward on the right creating plenty of problems for Clonee while on the left Alex San Emeterio was coolness personified as his cultured left foot was threading balls left right and centre. A third was inevitable and duly came midway through the half.  Following good play on the left, Alex San Emeterio found Hughes who cut inside and played the ball to Reilly just outside the box who in turn played the ball square to that man, Turner again, who rifled home his and Castleknock’s third. A fitting reward for Turner who had turned in a great display as Centre Forward on the day.

Castleknock should have scored more with Hughes close  following great work on the right by Reilly and in a role reversal Reilly just failing to score from a well taken Hughes corner. In the last minute Sean Mc Clean nearly scored in what would have been a just reward for his efforts on the day.

The Celts will be happy with their day’
s work but need to be aware of relaxing in games as Clonee nearly punished them for a sluggish start to the second half. Credit to Clonee who should be proud of their performance against a team in a higher division. Well done to all concerned.  match action
