A “roller-coaster” of a match was how one of the Executive Committee described this encounter. Playing host to Darndale FC, it took the visitors only 3mins to rack up a score and had doubled their lead within 7 mins. Playing with a slightly reshaped team, the Celts did not fold but kept their heads high.
Signs were there that James Yeskerski would score having come painfully close on two occasions in the early minutes. It came after 14mins, but from the boot of James Smith. The Celtic defence now wise to the Darndale tactics did not concede again in the first half. 1- 2 at half time.
The second half started with an extraordinary run from Caoimhe Lynam. She was on fire, her speed ripped apart the Darndale defence and almost resulted in a solo goal. Pressure continued on the Darndale goal and the next goal came on 14min after the break from a corner which was met by the “in form” Caoimhe, bringing the scores level at 2 – 2, which was her first goal of the season.
Darndale replied almost immediately turning defence into attack and scoring from a fast breaking movement. Similarly, James Smith advanced on the goal at the other end only to be taken down in the box by the Darndale goalkeeper. The keeper was yellow carded and the penalty was slotted home calmly by Sean Ryan. 3-3.
The match was somewhat marred by the behaviour of some of the Darndale players receiving three yellow cards in all during the match. At 3-3, the final few minutes were to be a tense affair. On the 28th minute James Yeskerski broke through again and slotted home what was surely the winner. 4 – 3. Darndale lifted themselves one last time and scored from close range. Points shared, 4-4 but not good for anyone with a coronary condition ! But then anyone with a weak disposition should not get on a roller-coaster.
