After their convincing victory over St Josephs Sallynoggin the previous week in the Leinster Youths Cup, Celtic were in confident mood for their league encounter at home to St Kevin’s Boys, though very conscious of the visitors’ form which had seen them unbeaten, their only loss of points coming in a draw against Belvedere FC. That form saw them race into a 2 goal advantage with goals from Arron O’Brien and Dermuid Christie, which was how it stood at half time. 0-2
The second half was more of the same when a great piece of opportunism saw the Kevin’s no. 9, Luke Greenhulch, race in to beat the Celtic defender to the ball as he placed his shot perfectly into the only spot that Kevin McGovern in the Celtic goal could not reach. It looked all over as a contest. But Celtic had other ideas and their battling qualities are well known. The first dent in the Kevin’s defence came as the game entered the final quarter. Nicky Kelly curled a gem of a free kick into the top corner of the net. 1-3 and game on. With only 5 mins remaining, it was Pat Madjeski who headed home after a period of pressure from Celtic. With the referee counting down the minutes, Kyle Turner found space in the Kevin’s box and his shot came back off the inside of the bar. Then with the visitors crying out for the full time whistle, Celtic’s captain and centre half hit a thunderous drive from 30 yards into the right hand corner of the net. Wild celebrations broke out on the home touchline. Not satisfied with sharing the points, Celtic made one final effort to snatch a victory. They broke yet again on the left hand side, and the excellent David Beatty crossed beautifully but the ball just eluded the incoming Kyle Turner. A great game ended with honours even. Manager Brian Kennedy was satisfied that the result was a fair one following a game between two very evenly matched teams. 3-3
